"...On one level, Salavandra named for the fictional island where the story takes place, examines a revolution on a coffee-producing island in the Caribbean. On another level, it offers readers a critique of U.S. trade policy, globalization and international labour conditions. Without giving too much away, the story revolves around Antonio Richards and his dream to marry his childhood sweetheart, Mary Gonzalez. Antonio wants to raise a family while caring for his coffee trees. This dream is swept aside when he is forced to create the United Front for the Liberation of Salavandra (UFLS) to fight against the political and economic forces controlling the island...."
